What Is an Indonesia Student Visa for foreigners?
An Indonesia student visa is a visa for foreigners or International students who would like to pursue their education in Indonesia.
Please note that the first thing you should prepare is getting a letter of acceptance from an Indonesian higher education institution. Therefore, there is no one-application student visa in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, for international students who already have got the letter of acceptance letter from an Indonesian higher education institution, you can follow these steps.
How to Apply for an Indonesia Student Visa
There are 4 steps to apply for an Indonesian Student Visa. The steps are as follows:
- Apply for a Study Permit from Indonesian Ministry of Education.
- Apply for an entry visa (VITAS) at the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate in your country.
- Upon arrival in Indonesia, Change the VITAS into a KITAS (Limited Stay Permit) at the Immigration Department.
- Obtain a Certificate of Police Registration Card.
Then, you should meet all requirements from each step to apply for an Indonesia Student Visa.
1. Apply for a Study Permit from the Indonesian Ministry of Education
These are the requirements to apply for a Study Permit:
- A copy of the recommendation letter issued by your university.
- A copy of your Letter of Acceptance.
- A letter of recommendation from the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence.
- A Letter of Financial Guarantee or a sponsorship certificate that proves you can cover your study and living expenses.
- Complete application form.
- A copy of your academic transcript and records.
- Your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Three copies of your passport.
- Two passport-sized photographs.
- Health certificate.
Thanks to you are still abroad, your Indonesian educational institution (university) should assist you to process this. Once the Indonesian Ministry of Education issues the Study Permit, they will follow up it to the Head Office of the Immigration Department in Jakarta. Next, they can issue your visa.
2. Apply for an entry visa (VITAS)
Then, to apply for an entry visa (VITAS) at the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate in your country, you should follow these steps:
- Please contact the Embassy/Consulate or visit their website to learn about the visa application requirements. If necessary, make an appointment.
- Prepare the required documents for the Indonesia student visa application.
- Make a payment of the Indonesia visa fee.
- Submit all required documents to the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate, by mail or in person.
- Once they have a decision, you should go back to pick up your passport and documents. If you applied by mail, the Embassy/Consulate will send you an email.
The required documents that you need are as follows:
- A copy of the study permit from the Ministry of National Education.
- A copy of the Recommendation Letter from your university is addressed to the Directorate of Immigration.
- A Letter of Financial Guarantee or a sponsorship certificate that proves you can cover your study and living expenses.
- A copy of the Letter of Acceptance Letter from your university.
- A copy of your academic transcript and records.
- Your Curriculum Vitae.
- A copy of your passport.
- Two recent passport-size pictures (4×6 cm).
- Health certificate.
Then, you can enter Indonesia once your VITAS has been approved. The immigration department will grant a stamp on your passport with the ITAS. This means you can stay in Indonesia legally.
3. Change the VITAS into a KITAS (Limited Stay Permit)
Once you arrive in Indonesia with your VITAS, within 30 (thirty) days you should go to the immigration department to gain your KITAS which is a physical card to show the authorities you are eligible to stay in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, to apply for KITAS, you also submit some required documents, as follows:
- The Letter of Acceptance.
- The Letter of Recommendation or the Certificate of Sponsorship from the university.
- Your passport.
- A copy of the telex visa.
- A copy of the study permit.
- Your CV.
- Your academic reports.
- Proof of financial responsibility from your parents, legal guardians, or a sponsor during your studies.
4. Obtain a Certificate of Police Registration Card
Afterward, you must register and report to related parties. You should proceed from the local police department to obtain an Indonesian Police Report Letter (Surat Tanda Melapor / STM) and a Certificate of Registration for Temporary Resident (Surat Keterangan Pendaftaran Penduduk Sementara / SKPPS.
Those are the procedure to obtain the Indonesian Student Visa.
